salutes 85 Years as a Historic Venue

The Belcourt Theatre will toast its 85th anniversary this summer by doing what any cinema matriarch would do at that age—it’s going to have a little work done. At a recent birthday celebration, new seats, carpets, and wall drapes in the 1925 Hall were unveiled. The 85th anniversary of the Belcourt coincides with its tenth year as Nashville’s only independent art house cinema.
“I can’t think of a better birthday present for the building or for the organization than having the opportunity to make these upgrades to the historic 1925 Hall, originally known as the Hillsboro Theatre,” says managing director Stephanie Silverman. “We were able to do it only through the immense generosity of this community, and we can’t say thank you enough!”
To keep the festivities going, the Belcourt has planned a full schedule all summer long. Theatre organizers have decided to host a summer of twelve Akira Kurosawa films, running Saturdays and Sundays at noon through August 16. Silverman says that Kurosawa’s creativity and longevity “represent all of the things that we at the Belcourt hope to be as an organization.” To commemorate the master Japanese filmmaker who would have turned one hundred years old this year, these carefully selected films represent a cross section of early genre work, post-war themed drama, film noir, and all-out action.
Recognized nationally as one of the most outstanding independent theatres in the country, the Belcourt is an important Nashville cultural venue. For additional days and show times of movies mentioned in this article, go to www.belcourt.org.
